FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGICAL DISORDER

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a varied and highly complex neurological condition which can present with disorders of body movement, sensation, speech, and function.

A coordinated multi-disciplinary approach may be involved in your treatment including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and psychology. At ARC, we work as a team and coordinate services alongside your medical specialist to make sure you get the best benefit. Treatment will always be tailored to your particular needs.

If you have been diagnosed with a functional movement disorder, you and your medical team may be at a loss with how to get help to function better and indeed how to find a health professional who understands the condition. We are one of the only sites in Australia to offer a dedicated multi-disciplinary FND team of clinicians to help you with this complex condition.

In simple terms, with FND there is no structural damage of the brain, nervous system or muscles. However, due to a complex combination of bio-psychosocial factors, some people are at more risk of developing FND. With FND, the brain does not function smoothly and there is thought to be altered signal interpretation causing the signals sent from the brain to be affected, resulting in abnormal movements and other symptoms. Many people experience intense fatigue, sometimes pain and challenges with thinking clearly. Involuntary movements and dissociation are also common within FND which can be misinterpreted as seizure activity.

An overwhelming positive feature of FND is the potential for recovery and regaining more normal movement and function with appropriate intervention. Following an initial assessment with our neurological physiotherapist, an individualised treatment approach is discussed in line with your specific goals.

Working with a team who understands your condition is key.

Therapy for Functional Neurological Disorders

FND Rehabilitation programs can include:

  • Either an intensive block of therapy or a slower stream approach depending on your individual presentation

  • Relearning everyday tasks such as walking, transfers and using your arm and hand, with a focus of improving the quality of movement by influencing the disrupted brain and muscle connections

  • Education around strategies and tools for self-management outside of therapy sessions

  • Establish community based goals and exploring options for community participation

  • A single disciplinary or multi-disciplinary approach depending on your unique needs and goals
